For Khloé Kardashian, there’s no such thing as privacy. She knows that the whole world is, watching, whether she’s on the publicity circuit promoting a studded handbag or healing a broken heart. In the past year she’s survived many a scandal, with rumours still circulating about her marriage to Lamar Odom.

There are days she wishes she could hide – but she knows sharing her rawest moments with everyone who owns a television is a life she has chosen. It’s a life she shares with the people close to her heart: her family. Together, they get through it all – births, divorces, proposals, sex tapes, fights, break-ups, cheating rumours, and new relationships.

Khloé, 29, was here in Australia recently to bring the brand-spanking new line of clothing and accessories – her latest collab with her bodacious, super-famous sisters Kourtney and Kim – to our attention. We caught up to find out exactly what it’s like keeping up with Khloé… And, let us tell you, it was awesome.

It’s been a big few months for the Kardashians with babies, divorces and engagements. How do you cope with it all? You know there are definitely really hard times. A lot of times we wish we could deal with things in private but, with what we do, it comes with the territory. If you’re going to do a reality program, or put your life on display, you can’t just say “I’m only going to be here when it’s good.” It’s not realistic, and not reality. We are such a tight-knit family that we really lean on each other.

I think the biggest key is staying off a lot of the social sites because it can be toxic for you, and you start believing things that aren’t true. It can be so negative. There are always positives; our brains are just built to remember the negative. Whether it’s working out or spending time with the family – whatever we need to do to get through – we’ll do that, rather than sit there looking at a website. Since going through a lot of stuff, we’ve learnt we can only rely on each other.

We spoke to Kendall recently and can’t believe how fast she’s growing up. Do you feel like you’ve almost been a second mum to Kendall and Kylie? I do! They’re my little angels, those two girls. I’m obsessed with them. They’re definitely getting bigger – Kylie is 16 and Kendall is 18 and they’re just my best friends. I feel like a second mum to them and they say the same thing about me. But I like that because sometimes, you know, maybe there are things they’re not comfortable to talk to my mum about, so they’ll talk to me about it.

They’re obviously teenagers so they have their moments! But just to see how they’ve grown up and what awesome people they are – their hearts are in the right place and they are good people. I’m proud even though they’re not my kids. I’m proud just to be around them.

What kind of advice do you give them about growing up? I always say to both of them, you have your whole lives to be old, and only a few years to be young. When I was 15 I wanted to be 25, and then when you turn 25 you’re like “Wait, I want to be 16 again!” You only have a few years, your teenage years, so embrace them and relish in that. I don’t want them to feel like they need to be in clubs – they have their whole lives to do that.

You’re looking super gorgeous at the moment. What are your secrets for looking so good? I’ve definitely become obsessed with working out! It’s funny, because my weight has always fluctuated – but recently so many people have been saying “you look so good, you’ve lost all this weight.” It’s actually been about a year and a half that I’ve been making a lifestyle change. There’s no quick fix, I would say. If I ate better, I would lose weight faster, but I don’t want to. I love food and there’s lots of family time with food and your friends. I work out really hard so I can have my champagne and that part of life. I’d rather take longer to lose weight, but have fun doing it.

That sounds so sensible. What workouts keep you sane? I love to box. Boxing is really fun, and it’s such a stress reliever. I’m just so busy having fun, I forget that I’m working out; 45 minutes go by and I’m dripping wet. We do a lot of workouts together, my sisters and I, and we go on a lot of hikes and walks outside. I never like doing the same workout two days in a row, I just get bored. I’ll try anything except surfing. I won’t go in the water. I’m terrified of whales and sharks. I’ll go in a pool, though. I’d be terrified of the ocean in Australia!

You’re now an aunty for a third time! Congratulations. Isn’t it just the best feeling? Yes! I think I’m the favourite aunt. They all love me! Someone might dispute me on that, but I have fun with them. I’m silly and wild and I love being goofy around them. North [West, Kim’s daughter] is just so young and cute, you just want to nibble on her cheek. But with Mason [Disick, Kourtney’s son], I can be wild and rough. And Penelope [Kourtney’s daughter] is just like Kourtney; she’s mellow, the perfect little girl. They’re so cute.

You’ve done so many seasons of KUWTK. How much longer do you think you want to be in the spotlight? I just don’t know… I never want to say never to anything. The beauty of life is the mystery of it – it’s fun and scary at the same time to not know what will happen in a few months. At the moment we’re in the middle of filming Season Nine.

I love that I have the opportunity to be with my family all the time. Most people, when they’re growing up and having children or getting married, would only see each other on special holidays. They don’t work together all the time. We are really blessed that we get to do that, and call it our jobs. There are some days when you don’t want to go to work. Right now I love what we do – it could keep on going for another 20 years! I’m not sure. We film the realness of our lives. In life you have ups and downs, ours are just on television. We’re so blessed to have it all documented. We get to have these beautiful home videos for the rest of our lives. You know there’s also real sadness, but I will always say the good outweighs the bad, because if it was the other way around, we would not be doing what we’re doing.

Are there times you’ve wished you didn’t have to go outside? All the time. You know, because you’re still human, sometimes you just wake up and you’re in a really sensitive mood. Especially as girls, you have times when you’re really emotional. And people heckling at you can break you down easier than other days. On other days, you’re strong as a brick wall and nothing can get to you, but it depends on the moment, or that day. I think I get more defensive when I’m with my nieces or nephew or little sisters; I don’t like when people are yelling things around them because I don’t want them to know certain things. I know my little sisters are older now but when people say things about my parents, I still want to be protective of them because I don’t think it’s appropriate. I don’t know if I’ll ever feel comfortable with that, and I’ll always be their bigger sister.

You’re in Australia to promote the Kardashian Kollection. Tell us, what’s the new line like? Australia has been really special for me and my sisters because it was the first place we really launched the Kardashian Kollection. Now we are launching our shoes here exclusively, which is exciting for us. What girl doesn’t like shoes?! It doesn’t matter what size you are, they will fit. It’s always fun for us to do our clothing here because obviously your seasons are the opposite of ours, so when it’s a lot of blacks and drabs [in the US], it’s fun to be designing for you with a lot of bright colours.
